ENThe topics analyzed in the article reveal how the development of Lithuanian National Museum of Art (LNMA) since 1941, when LNMA from a city museum changed to an art museum (especially the change of its buildings and the dynamics of collections), influenced the development of the museum in the period of Independence (between the 1990s and 2020s). In the ideologized by the Soviet authorities and controlled by censorship environment that constrained a number of significant topics for a deeper understanding of Lithuanian art history – GDL nobles and GDL religious art, Lithuanian interwar modernist art, Lithuanian exile art and others – have to be reconstructed or re-created after the Restoration of Independence. These processes inevitably influenced the processes of assembling LNMA collections and the formation of expositions as well as the exhibition and publishing activities. The image of the museum in Lithuanian society was also greatly influenced by the constant change of its buildings and the fact that LNMA was moved into cultural heritage buildings not to ensure the quality of museum activities but to protect these buildings from devastation or destruction. Thus, the activities of the museum after the Restoration of Independence were largely determined by the desire to recover the forbidden themes and discover the new areas of museum research and collection (such as contemporary art and exile art). It is obvious that the quality and impact of the future activities of LNMA on society will be determined by museum and art research activities based on consistent research, both in compiling collections and in forming expositions, organizing exhibitions, and publishing publications. The success of the reconstructions of the Radvilas Palace and the Chodkevičius Palace and the “reprogramming” of the Vytautas Kasiulis Art Museum into the Lithuanian Exile Art Museum will also have a significant impact on the activities of the museum. Achieving ambitious future goals will require not only the mobilization of LNMA’s internal expert forces but also the intensification of cooperation with other researchers and curators.
