ENRokiškis Regional Museum is the first museum in Lithuania located in a manor. It was established in the summer of 1940, when the counts Pšezdzieckiai left Rokiškis. Impetuous events of that period made museologists leave the manor time and again, and only in 1952 it was established here permanently. The valuables accumulated by the counts and the ones that already had been in it suffered during nationalization during and after the war. However, museologists were able to save a big part of them and collect what was scattered. In the museum’s collections over 1,100 photographs and negatives from Rokiškis manor are preserved. They cover the period of the end of the 19th century – 1940. These are the photos of the members of the Pšezdzieckiai family taken by masters in photo studios: Jonas Pšezdzieckis, his beautiful wife Hermancija Sapiegaitė, their children, and relatives. The photos are taken by photo masters in different cities: Warsaw, Vilnius, Paris, Nice, etc. However, the biggest part of photographs consists of photos taken by the counts themselves. Photography was a favourite occupation of count Jonas Pšezdzieckis (1877–1944). In the museum’s collections, there is a photo dated to the end of the 19th century, where a group of travellers in mountainous, woody area is captured. The record on the other side of the photo indicates that it is a city of West Croatia Abazija (Opatija). The author of the photo is unknown, however, in the same record it is indicated, that a person with a camera – Jonas Pšezdzieckis. The count’s children liked photography as well. How did the photographs of counts appear in the collections of Rokiškis Regional Museum? Most of them appeared during the post-war period from the former manor archive, however, in that time to be interested in, inquire about the counts and their valuables were dangerous. A lot of photos were obtained from people who worked in the manor in later times: nannies, cook’s family and his descendants, gardener’s children, and other people. The museum’s collections have been supplemented with the photos of counts family till nowadays. In 2012, the museum got the album with 234 photos of the counts covering the period of 1931–1932. Some photos contain records in the Polish language. Looking at the photos it is seen that the counts were keen on photography as everything was photographed: children and their games, guests, moments of everyday life and celebrations, horse riding and trips by cars to other manors, hunting, tennis game, dogs, horses and other animals. It is also seen in photos how exterior and interior of the manor looked like. The counts took photos of farm work, stables, other farm buildings. The publication contains over 150 photographs, they reveal not only the counts Pšezdzieckiai passion for photography but also their everyday life. [From the publication]
