Summary / Abstract:

Detaliuosius archeologinius tyrimus atliko Vilniaus universiteto doc. dr. Gintautas Vėlius ir Agnė Žilinskaitė, darbus organizavo ir archyvinę medžiagą parengė LGGRTC Memorialinio departamento Atminimo programų skyriaus vyriausiasis specialistas Dalius Žygelis. Tokio pobūdžio tyrimas, kai buvo pritaikyti keli moksliniai metodai, leido lyginti gautus duomenis, o rezultatai padėjo atkurti įvykių eigą, atskleisti MGB agentų veiklos taktiką, partizanų žūties aplinkybes, rasti palaikus, o gausus archeologinių radinių skaičius suteikė progą pažinti partizanų kasdienybę. ENIn spring 2012, a request was filed with the Genocide and Resistance Research Center of Lithuania (hereinafter LGGRTC) regarding the investigation of, and search for remains in the partisan bunker located in Zervynos-Palkabalys Forest (Zervynos Forestry Division of Varėna District). The investigation was prompted by a document discovered at the Lithuanian Special Archives. The document contained a record that on 20 May 1952, agent-storm troopers of the MGB 2N Board found a bunker of Genys Platoon (Grand Duke Vytautas tėvūnija [a partisan unit, which operated in several rural areas], Kazimieraitis Brigade) of Dainava Military District. During the fight with the agent-storm troopers, four partisans were killed: Vytas Sadauskas-Karys, Antanas Česnulevičius-Mėnulis, Jonas Peciukonis-Banginis, and Vytautas Lukoševičius-Balandis. The investigation was carried out in several stages – collection of archival documents, detailed archaeological research, search for and exhumation of the remains, and anthropological analysis of the remains. Detailed archaeological research of the bunker was carried out between 27 June – 4 August 2012. The aim of the research was to explore the size of the bunker and its construction details; to identify whether there were partisan remains in the bunker and if so, to exhume them, and to collect material illustrating the life of the partisans and the circumstances of their death. During the archaeological excavations 684 individual finds and 820 units of mass material were uncovered.Archaeological finds can be classified into several categories: 1) elements of weaponry; 2) fragments of uniforms with national insignia; 3) fragments of heating stoves; 4) items of daily life and personal hygiene; and 5) cultural and religious items. The material uncovered during the archaeological excavations was handed over to the Museum of Genocide Victims of LGGRTC. The remains of the partisans were found outside the bunker and handed over to the State Forensic Medicine Service. During the examination of the remains the age, gender, number of partisans and the cause of their deaths were identified. The DNA test confirmed the kinship between one of those who died and his sister who is still alive. On 17 May 2013, in the town of Perloja (Varėna District), the remains of the partisans of Dainava Military District were buried in a solemn ceremony in the churchyard of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Francis of Assisi Church. This type of study involving several scientific methods allowed the data and results obtained to be compared and the course of events to be reconstructed. It further disclosed the operating strategy of MGB agents and the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the partisans and also led to the detection of their remains. The rich archaeological finds provided an opportunity to know about the daily life of the partisans of Genys Platoon. [From the publication]
