Summary / Abstract:

ENThe article investigates the emergency of the hereditary personal names (surnames) of the nobility of the Grodno County recorded in the 1565 census of the GDL army. Personal names of the previous generation -sk- type in 1565 could be transferred by making a derivative of the patronymic suffix (Друцкевичъ, Долгошцичъ) or by transferring it directly into the names of the persons of the next generation; this is how the personal name becomes a surname. However, most of these personal names were not inherited yet. The personal name of the -sk- type was transferred to the naming of one woman as an example of the transfer of patronymics, i.e., by changing the inflection to the genitive: Струтынского. Two -sk- surnames were found: Халецки, Куровъски. Six other -sk- type personal names are the first mention of the later-proven surnames: They had to become surnames in the second half of the 16th century. Of personal names that are not names, patronymics, or -sk- type anthroponyms, the surname Шышъко is not in doubt. With some limitation, we can also assume four personal names of this type, which lost the patronymic suffix when they turned into surnames: The 1565 document is the first mention of five other personal names of this type, which were later confirmed, i.e., They had to become surnames in the second half of the 16th century. Four surnames were recorded among the first patronyms of naming: There are two more first mention surnames of this type later confirmed, i.e., Бутрымовичъ, Полуяновичъ. It can be speculated that a rare patronymic form of the Christian personal name Хомичъ, later testified as a surname, in the 1565 document it was first mentioned as the future surname. These personal names had to be transformed into surnames in the second half of the 16th century. Other patronyms, especially recorded in the gen. sg. case, represented the old naming system, where they partially performed the function of current surnames. The surnames derived from the latter patronyms in gen. sg. Ейсмон[ъ]товича and in gen. sg. Сиръкгутевича (also a variant of the recorded Шыркгутевичъ) may have functioned as early as the middle of the 16th century if they had been recorded in the nominative rather than the genitive. Of the second patronyms, the first mention of a surname later testified is the gen. sg. The personal name, which lost its suffix, had to turn into a surname in the second half of the 16th century. One person had two surnames: Халецъки Киселевичъ. Two individuals each had two potential surnames, i.e., Новицъки Ейсмонътовича and Ейсмонътовича Снаръски. The two -sk- personal names Новицъки and Снаръски recorded here were the first mention of a later surname, and the personal names in gen. sg. Ейсмонътовича represented the old naming system but recorded in the nominative they could be considered a surname in the middle of the 16th century. [From the publication]
