Emploi et traduction des unités phraséologiques en lituanien dans "La vie devant soi" de Romain Gary

ENThe purpose of this article is to do an analysis of the use and the translation of idioms in the novel “The Life Before Us” by Romain Gary and answer these questions: How do idioms used in Gary’s novel convey the author’s message? Which strategies did translator Jūratė Navakauskienė choose for translating the idioms into Lithuanian? The article presents the semantic analysis of idioms used in the novel and the strategies of translation analysis based on fundamental theoretical references in four languages – Lithuanian, French, English and Russian. The three most used semantic groups of idioms in the novel are those that represent the phenomena of the inner world of a person, relationships, and social life. We found that the strategies for translating the idioms that predominate in this translation were: translation by paraphrasing, by equivalents, and by phraseological synonyms. In this research, the attention is also paid to the writing style of Romain Gary and the importance of idioms in his novel. The research shows how the use of idioms in the analyzed text is related to the context of it, and what strategies the translator Navakauskienė used to translate idioms seeking to maintain the artistic integrity of the work.
