ENDue to changing lifestyles, developing smart technologies, and increasing women independence, people relationship to money is also changing. With the increasing freedom in financial management, the family budget is being more and more individualized. The willingness to manage finances individually in a family relationship, can evoke financial conflicts that escalate into financial infidelity. The phenomenon of financial infidelity includes concealed purchases from your partner, secret accounts and investments, and the deferral of money for a “black day” without the partner’s awareness. Thus, financial infidelity as a phenomenon takes on an increasingly important role in household finances. While this topic is becoming more and more relevant in modern times, data and research on this phenomenon of financial infidelity are still limited. Most of the research related to the phenomenon of financial infidelity are carried out by commercial institutions (e.g. Swedbank). In summary, analysis have shown that most studies are related to the extent of the phenomenon of financial infidelity (Jeanfreau et al., 2020; Garbinsky et al., 2019), and the most frequently analyzed region is the USA. Financial infidelity is investigated in a limited way in Lithuania, and the existing research does not reveal this phenomenon widely. Therefore, a scientific problem addressed in this paper is emerging naturally: how does financial infidelity develop in Lithuanian households? In summary, previous studies on financial infidelity have defined that financial infidelity can occur in various areas of personal financial management, such as income, spending, savings or borrowing decisions. The concentration of previous studiesin the US region and the fragmentation of studies, where only one area of financial infidelity is analyzed, outlines the need to conduct research in this area in other countries, combining a wider range of financial management areas where financial infidelity can arise. The methodology established in this research for the complex examination of financial infidelity was adapted to the manifestation of financial infidelity of Lithuanian households. The research results were derived from the data of 384 questionnaires of Lithuanian households. The research was conducted in April-May, 2020. This study found that as many as 66 % of respondents surveyed were financially unfaithful. Interestingly, not only were those respondents who manage finances separately, but also those who manage finance with their partner, were financially unfaithful. It is important that financial infidelity between women and men is widespread on a similar scale in Lithuania. Financially defiant individuals in Lithuania are more likely to be married, 35-44 years of age. Likewise, many financially disloyal people do not treat this behavior as financial infidelity. Among the most frequently concealed financial decisions, the expenditure on children needs are to be mentioned, and the least often concealed are the expenditure on pornographic material. Further studies in this area could include assessing determinants of financial infidelity in Lithuanian households. It would make sense to repeat the study in a few years’ time and compare the results obtained in order to assess the trend towards the formation of financial infidelity. Keywords: personal finance, financial infidelity. [From the publication]
