ENThe article is devoted to the penetration of firearms on the border of the Teutonic Order and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the 14th century. One of the first men who became interested in this topic was a historian of the 16th century, a contemporary of the so-called «Military revolution» and the first historian of the Grand Duchy, Maciej Stryjkowski. The earliest references to the use of this weapon by the troops of the Teutonic Order are contained is in his chronicle. Nevertheless, despite the scrupulousness of the work of M. Stryjkowski and the wide narrative base that he used, his information requires analysis and double-checking. Special attention in this case is given to the episode of the death of Grand Duke Gediminas from a shot from a handbrake during the storming of one of the order castles, which is popular in the Belarusian scientific and popular science sphere.
