ENThe article discusses the relatively late involvement of women in musicological activities, their rapidly increasing numbers but also their insufficient participation in governance structures due to the impact of gender stereotypes. With the approach of the last quarter of the 20th century, there was a gradual increase in the evaluation of the role of women and self-esteem, as well as a radical change in the situation. They were invited to work for the departments of higher education schools, become heads of departments (then considered a prestigious position); there were more women defending dissertations in the field of musicology and were later elected chairpersons of the Musicologists Section of the Composers’ Union and so on. The numbers of musicologists in Lithuania are too small to rely on statistical data alone. Here, each person is valued more in terms of their individual abilities and circumstances. It is difficult to equivalently compare quantities that have different components. The study relies on the long-term monitoring of performance and lists of those who studied musicology. The theory of attribution has been applied to assess the situation, which in social psychology explains the psychic characteristics of another person and the reasons for their behaviour. Judgement is difficult based on a single component, because here we are faced with a causal chain when it is not always clear which is its main link. Some of them correlate with the general development of women’s participation in cultural processes and can be seen as a general trend in social life, and some would belong to the sphere of segregation, personal motives, the given circumstances taken as a whole, and career trajectories. Society is withdrawing from patriarchal traditions very slowly. [From the publication]
