LTKultūros spaudoje Cz. Jankowskio teatro klausimai užėmė svarbią vietą. Tarp keliamų temų atsidūrė teatro organizacijos ir finansavimo problemos, naujausios tendencijos Europos teatruose bei Vilniaus scenų aktualaus repertuaro teatrinės recenzijos. Savo recenzijose jis apjungė teatro kritiko žvilgsnį su literatūros kritiko ir visuomenės reikalais besidominčio publicisto požiūriu. Publikacijas skelbė Vilniaus konservatyviosios pakraipos dienraštyje „Słowo“ [Žodis]. Jo recenzijos buvo gana aiškiai pasidalijusios į interpretacinę-digresinę ir teatrinę dalis, tačiau kartu sudaro glaudžią visumą. Pirmoji dalis buvo pagrindas kritinei pasirinktų teatrinio vaidinimo elementų analizei, ypač aktorių vaidybai, idėjų išgavimo ir perteikimo būdams, vaidinimo keliamiems jausmams, personažų kūrimui ar galiausiai atitinkamo dramos žanro (tragedijos, komedijos, farso, melodramos etc.) pamatinių lemiančių veiksnių įgyvendinimui. Jankowskio recenzijos pasižymi edukacinėmis ypatybėmis, tačiau tai nėra tik įvedimas į literatūros ar teatro problemas. Įpindamas į savo feljetonus dialogus, užsienio kalbų citatas, retorinius klausimus, digresijas, savo recenzijoms jis suteikdavo prieštaringą pobūdį, skatino savuosius skaitytojus intelektinei veiklai, sekti jo minčių srautą ir formuluoti savus vertinimus. ENThe article presents the literary output of Czesław Jankowski as a theatre critic publishing in the “Słowa” (“Words”) magazine from Vilnius. The text is a trigger for more extensive research on the theatricals of his authorship. In addition to the reviews, Jankowski deliberated over theatrical issues in his series of feuilletons “Przechadzki po Wilnie” (“Strolls around Vilnius”) and other journalistic texts. His reviews allow for reconstruction of opinions about theatre as art of special social features. His underlying thought about theatre is a conviction that the theatre in Vilnius, a multicultural and multinational city located on the edge of Poland, must be open-minded. This means that its repertoire requires careful thought, so that it can attract as large audience as possible. A high artistic level must also be maintained. According to Jankowski, opera in particular could have played a major part in attracting viewers from Jewish and Russian communities. He hoped that transferring J. Osterwa’s “Reduta” would create a stage of all- -Polish significance.He mentioned two primary goals of the theatres in Vilnius: fostering the culture of Polish community and gaining viewers of other nationalities residing in Vilnius. According to Jankowski, such goals and functions of the theatre in Vilnius were in harmony with the state policy. He also indicated three “pillars” on which “statehood wishing to have all its citizens as faithful defenders and servants” must lean: “a good constitution, exemplary bureaucracy and high culture”. His reviews are characterised by insight in presenting a particular issue, erudition, which proves broad knowledge not only in literature as such, but also in theatrical writing, and explicitness in formulating assessments, demands or applications, particularly if they were about the organisation and funding of the theatre.
