ENJan Karol Chodkiewicz (1686–1712), a descendant of the Supraśl line of the Chodkiewicz family, is a historical figure that has never been researched or even mentioned in a short biographical note. This article focuses on the period between 1700 and 1705, when Chodkiewicz attended a Jesuit school in Warsaw. Education was an important milestone in the lives of young magnates, and it prepared them for holding important offices in the state and living among the nobility. The above also applied to Jan Karol, an heir to the immense fortune of the Chodkiewicz family who spent the rest of his short life litigating over his ancestral estates. The young starost received his education during the difficult period of the Great Northern War (1700–1721) which engulfed the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in political and military conflict. Those events had undoubtedly made a mark on Jan Karol’s formative process. The article details the income (percepta) of Jan Karol Chodkiewicz (1686–1712), the starost of Veliuona, Zabłudów, Baisogala and Daugeliskis, and his spending on education in Warsaw in 1700–1705. The young magnate’s court (number of servants, spending on goods and luxuries, and the cost of products and services at the time) can be reconstructed based of the sources presented in the appendices. These sources also provide valuable insights into the magnates’ diet, contemporary men’s fashion, and the subjects studied by young Chodkiewicz. This article makes a valuable contribution to further research into the history of education of young magnates in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, as well as financial and material aspects of education in the early 18th century.
