ENThe aim of this article is to discuss and summarize the tendencies and functions of using colons and dashes which prevailed in the Lithuanian writings of the 19th century, as there are no studies addressing the punctuation of the Lithuanian writings dating to the period under analysis. The research material was collected from original and translated works, which can serve as proper representatives of the situation of the written language during the period under analysis. The empirical database is comprised of 800 cases of usage of colons and dashes. The study revealed that the sphere of usage of colons in the 19th century texts under investigation is far broader compared to contemporary Lithuanian. It should be noted that the usage of dashes was on the rise in the written Lithuanian language of the mid-19th century; a certain competition between colons and dashes in identical cases of punctuation can be observed. The synonymous usage of these punctuation marks can best be seen in the punctuation of asyndetic clauses of a composite sentence. [From the publication]
