ENIn the modern Polish graphics section, especially noteworthy is a large and concise set of works representing pre-war Vilnius school. It is, however, no coincidence, as it is commonly known that most of the professors of the newly founded Faculty of Fine Arts at Nicolaus Copernicus University were professors and artists who came to Toruń from Stefan Batory University in Vilnius. It is largely their works that dominate in the Vilnius graphics collections of Toruńs University. Thus, taking into account the fact that up to date this unique, and at the same time largest in Poland, collection has not been fully catalogued, and being at the same time inspired by two major events - the 100th anniversary of the foundation of Stefan Batory University and the aforementioned 75th anniversary of Nicolaus Copernicus University - it was decided that the gap shall be filled. This ambitious task was undertaken by the longtime curator of University Library's graphics collections- senior curator, historian of art, Jan Kotłowski. It also is no coincidence, since Jan Kotkowski is an undisputed expert in this field. He is the author of several dozens of publications on the topic of Vilnius-Torun school of graphics, with a large number of exhibitions of which he was the curator, and hence the author of published catalogues, predestined this distinguished expert to prepare this publication. What is more, Jan Kotłowski not only made an attempt to scientifically describe the heritage of masters from Vilnius but to a large extent - due to his collector's passion, but first of all by engaging in mutual, friendly relations with the artists themselves or their successors - has been building up this collection for several decades. Thanks to his numerous contacts with living artists or their families, as well as a wide query and correspondence, the University Library has acquired valuable specimens of Vilnius art created by lecturers and graduates of the Faculty of Fine Arts of Stefan Batory University. The catalogue which we are presenting to you today, although probably due to the Coronavirus pandemic raging in 2020, only in the virtual world, is the result of those many years of efforts. Apart from the characteristics of the Vilnius graphic arts collection, which is in the collection of the University Library in Toruń by Jan Kotłowski, the catalogue primarily contains descriptions of 746 graphic works from this collection. The reader will be able to appreciate the value and beauty of the graphic art of the artists from the Vilnius-Torun school thanks to 250 photographs of selected best works from the university's collection. An important supplement to the work is a set of 60 biographical notes of the artists, whose works are presented in the publication. The catalogue closes with a list of selected literature on the subject and a helpful personal index. The whole is closed in a sophisticated graphic form thanks to the editorial efforts of the Nicolaus Copernicus University Press, which enjoys the reputation of one of the best academic publishing houses in the country.
