ENThe article is addresses the formation of а new historical region on Ukrainian lands in the second half of the 14th century – Podillia. Based on the analysis of written sources the article outlines the composition of this big region stretching for over 500 km from West to East, from Kamianets’ and Smotrych to Cherkasy and Zvenyhorod. It demonstrates how a region takes shape along the trade routes in the middle of the 14th century, the region, which until that time had no independent principality and from the 13th century was ruled by the Mongols and then the Golden Horde. Political changes 1340–1350 years led to the disappearance Kingdom of Rus’, and the crisis in the Golden Horde. These events gave impetus to the expanse of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania’s influence over the territory and princes Koriatovych taking control over the major settlements along the routes running on the left bank of the Dnister river and the Southern Buh basin.
