ENThe purpose of the article is to shed light on the main areas of social and economic life influenced by the functioning of bridges and dikes in the period from the latter half of the fifteenth century to the end of the sixteenth century. The choice of this period was imposed by some significant changes in Lithuanian legislation and administration, resulting in an increased number of charters granted to feudal lords. The exemplifications, primarily based on entries to the Lithuanian Metrica, reflect the everyday use of bridges and dikes as a means to facilitate communication, generating revenue in the form of tolls, or serving as landmarks, being a source of disputes, or an element of pond management.
