ENClergyman Petras Gerulis (1889–1966) studied at the Seinai Priest Seminary for three years and completed three-year courses. After the third year, he fell ill and did not attend the seminary. The management of the seminary, after learning about P. Gerulis’ cooperation in the Lithuanian press, expelled him from the seminary despite his still being in treatment. While studying at the seminary, he participated in the secret society of Lithuanian clergy, whose main goal was literary work. P. Gerulis also wrote articles on literary science and criticism, which were mainly published in the journal of Catholic intellectuals Draugija published in Kaunas. After being expelled from the seminary, he studied for a year at the University of Friborg in Switzerland. Here he wrote an article from the folklore Rue in Our Songs, which was also published in the Draugija and published in a separate book. Studies at the university were interrupted by military service in the tsarist army and the outbreak of the First World War. After the war, P. Gerulis did not return to Lithuania and lived in Ukraine. Therefore, it can be stated that due to the anti-Lithuanian attitude of the Rector and ViceRector of the Seinai Priest Seminary, P. Gerulis did not graduate from the seminary and did not become a priest. That circumstance was the reason why the beautifully revealed talent of a literary scholar and critic was suppressed by the unfavourable living conditions. [From the publication]
