ENLithuanian poet and the Bishop of Seinai, Antanas Baranauskas, was a colourful, a distinguished and honoured by the Lithuanian people, although sometimes a controversial, personality. A lot of scientific work has been written about him, his activities and his work have been analyzed in detail. The masterpiece of Lithuanian literature, Anykščių Šilelis, has been published several times, translated into Russian, Polish, Latvian and English. The aim of this article is quite modest. We want to look at the author of Anykščių Šilelis by employing more or less known facts from the life of the Bishop in Seinai, to tell about Baranauskas as regards what his countrymen, the Lithuanians from the Seinai County had expected and waited for from him, to talk about the posture of Antanas Baranauskas regarding cultural identity and growing conflicts over the service of the piety in the Lithuanian and Polish languages. Bishop. A. Baranauskas was favourable to Lithuanian clerks, but wanted to find a common model for the activities of Lithuanian and Polish clerks. He tried to keep up with the policies and tactics that fit his position. Not once did he have to hide from the authorities, but also from his own countrymen. Fearing to be called a Litvoman, he bowed against some of the Poles, looking for their favour, even though this annoyed and revolted the Lithuanians. Antanas Baranauskas is a classic of Lithuanian literature. He contributed to the Lithuanian national revival to a considerable extent. [From the publication]
