ENThe teaching of Russian subjects, i.e. Russian Language, Literature and National History, at the Seinai Seminary was introduced in 1864 and these subjects were taught until 1915. The teaching of these subjects in the Priest Seminary was always the focus of the Russian civilian authority, as it was aimed at achieving its goals of preparing Catholic clergy as loyal citizens of the Russian Empire who would be familiar with the Russian culture and history. For a long time, the question of the participation of the representatives of the civilian government in the examinations of Russian subjects was not legally settled. That question was finally resolved only on July 9, 1907 when the Agreement between the Apostolic Throne and the Russian Government on the teaching and examination of the Russian Language, Literature and National history at the Seminary of the Kingdom of Poland was signed. Bishop A. Baranauskas was encouraged to participate in the discussion on the teaching of Russian subjects at the Seinai Seminary by the letter from Ivanas Goremykinas, which he received on June 16, 1898, saying that the teaching of Russian Language, Literature and National History in the Polish Seminary is a bad thing and needs to be improved. Initially Bishop. A. Baranauskas had a strong position that there was no need to change anything about teaching these subjects at the Seinai Priest Seminary, i.e. to increase the number of weekly hours. However, the Bishop had to concede in the end. This publication presents the translations into the Lithuanian language of four Bishop A. Baranauskas‘s writings to the Minister, and plans and programmes for the teaching of the Russian Language, Literature and National History at the Seinai Seminary. The original documents are stored in the Russian State Historical Archive in St. Petersburg. [From the publication]
