LTPublikacijoje trumpai pristatomas naujai datuotas ir identifikuotas Vilniaus Šv. Pranciškaus ir šv. Bernardino bažnyčios presbiterijos sienų tapybos elementas – XVI a. viduryje sukurtas Vilniaus vyskupo Pauliaus Alšėniškio (apie 1490–1555) herbas. ENThe publication presents an element of mural painting recently discovered on the presbytery wall of the Vilnius Church of St Francis and St Bernardine – the coat of arms of the Vilnius Bishop Paulius Alšėniškis (Paweł Holszański, circa 1490–1555), created in the mid-16th century. It is one of the few known composite coats of arms of this bishop and the only one among them created in the mural painting technique. The coat of arms is painted on a semi-pillar separating the presbytery (monks’ choir) from the central nave. The figures in the coat of arms of Bishop Alšėniškis are arranged identically as in his super ex libris found on the cover of a book from his library, which is currently held at the Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania. Alšėniškis’s coat of arms not only provides new data on the bishop’s support for the Bernardine order in the period of the first independent Bernardine province of Lithuania established in 1530, but also significantly supplements the heritage of Lithuanian Renaissance mural painting as an excellent example of heraldic art.
