ENEducation and science expenditures are a significant investment in the growing economy of Lithuania and in the improvement of its social structure. The paper aims to form a harmonious educated society based on national and humanistic approaches. While seeking to implement this process into practice, authors suggest reducing the scale of study termination at a higher school. This is important not only for specific schools or for the academic society and also for the state. Going into the heart of the problem and analysing the reasons of its origin, it is very important to evaluate the influence of micro- and macro-environment. The aim of the survey is to state the reasons of termination of studies at a higher school. The following conclusions were drawn: the results of the survey demonstrated that there were numerous reasons for terminating studies. The most important ones that stimulated students to skip lectures were social and micro-social causes of the environment. The main factors that influenced the motivation upon entering a higher school: a wish to perceive, material values, social reasons, academic significance, professional reasons, subordination and experience. The survey results confirmed the thesis that absolute majority of dropouts were related to students’ poor progress. Qualitative survey results enable us to name some circumstances, which stimulate a retreat from higher schools, i.e., shortcomings of the study process, relationships with teachers, relationships with fellow-students and conditions at home. Besides, inadequate self-evaluation was also an important reason. [From the publication]
