LT2015-2016 m. vykdyti/ Jaunium/ ir IIguočių vietovių (Šiaurės Lietuva) žvalgymo metalo detektoriais surinktos medžiagos pagrindu analizuojama visiškai naujos archeologijos rūšies - kelių archeologijos - teikiamos galimybės ir perspektyvos. Žvalgant plačias teritorijas, pagal archeologinių radinių (iki XIX a.) išsidėstymą galima apytiksliai lokalizuoti senųjų kelių vietas ir datuoti jų panaudojimo laiką. Lietuvoje senųjų kelių vietos beveik nesaugomos, netyrinėtos, tad atsiverianti jų pažinimo perspektyva yra daug žadanti. ENThe research object of archaeology of roads is the old roads being undistinguished at the current environment (until the 19th century). Since the old roads were ground, after their decay, no trace of them remains. Nevertheless, the old road can be distinguished through single articles, that wer e lost while using the road, related to trade that wa s happening on the road (coins, stamps), the clothing of people traveling the road (buttons, belt buckles, other details) and mean s of transport. All of these groups of archaeological objects were found abundantly in Janiūnai (North Lithuania) in 2015, by means of metal detectors while looking for the location of the medieval Battle of Saulė (figure 1). The abundanc e of hardwar e beside an old road that existed here, wa s determined by the fact that the road crossed the river Mūš a and wa s formidable. According to the collected articles, the road functioned in this place from the 16t h century to the middle of the 20 , h century. The old maps also confirm its late stage. A location of a similar road wa s also localized in Ilgučiai (Radviliškis district) (figure 2). Individual articles from the Iron Age allow us to raise a hypothesis about a former place of communication in the 12 t h—13 l h centuries (figure 3). In the archaeology of roads the most important tool to their cognition is a me tal detector and the main road track can only be determined by performing broad territory explorations. Only 7 territories of old roads are protected in Lithuania, including stone paved swamp roads, which are not explored, so a role of the archaeology of roads in localizing unknown and exploring already known roads is significant.
