ENBasing himself on the theoretical works and empirical material the author in his article tries to show the importance of shepherding customs and connected with them traditional activities to children's maturity while becoming members of a traditional society in the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries. While showing the content, ceremonies and beliefs of shepherding customs - the first day of sending domestic animals to the grass, Whitsunday, Corpus Christi Day, it is emphasized the educational purpose of such customs - the realizing of shepherding aims, orientation to the pasturage success, reaching of the results by rational and magic actions. It was established by the quantitative analysis of the data, that according to tradition children started shepherding being 7 or 8 and did this approximately for four years. Empirical data concerning the shepherding activities are divided according to two criteria: the activities on their own free will and on their parents' will. The children joined actively the customs of shepherding and traditional shepherding activities, especially those done on their free will. The children developed their abilities more through the activities they liked, they broadened their outlook, became more experienced and learned to keep behaviour norms in various situations. Voluntary activities helped the children to socialize more than the forced one. The shepherding was not isolated from the community and social relations. The article shows how the maturity of children to become the members of traditional community while shepherding was influenced by different social conditions of various social estates of peasant families.
