ENNumerous talks between Prince Michał Kleofas Ogiński and King Stanisław August took place in the last years of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The Prince’s diaries provide valuable insights about the dialogue, they shed light on the discussed topics and the evolution of the relationship between the two great politicians. A sense of personal closeness emerged between the prince and the king during the constitutional period, shortly before and directly after 3 May 1791. The Grodno Sejm of 1793 forced the magnate to acknowledge his share of the responsibility and motivated him to defend the rights of the political nation, regardless of the consequences. The article analyzes the change in the relationship between the two statesmen and in their attitudes towards the situation of the state. [From the publication]
