ENEimuntas Nekrošius (1952-2018) was the leader of an entire theatre era, the first director to make Lithuanian theatre famous in Europe and the world, and in the context of contemporary stage arts was associated not only with the tradition of the authentic director's theatre, but also with the unique expression of post-dramatic aesthetics. His work received international acclaim in the 1980s, and the theatre he created was seen as an original artistic phenomenon: the individual aesthetics of directorial style and the metaphorical nature of his theatre became recognized as its identity. During the period discussed here, the author's theatre (auteur theatre) not only legitimized the autonomy of the director but also, bearing in mind the circumstances of the Soviet sociocultural context, through the directors imagination and the expression of scenic images and metaphors created the pure poetics of the performance that were less subjected to ideological censorship than were literary texts. At that time, theatre researchers called Eimuntas Nekrošius' theatre 'a theatre of metaphors'. It is important to note that his theatre world is still based on the idea that the director is the author of the play, and the play’s narrative is formed from interactions between metaphors/images and stage acts.
