ENThe paper sets out to examine the most characteristic cases of hiatus (a cluster of vowels across the syllable boundary) in the northern dialects of Western Highlanders of Kaunas Region. The most typical position of the hiatus is the junction between the prefix and the root. In dialects, the hiatus may be preserved (the both vowels are pronounced) or eliminated. In the data examined, there were about half of the cases with the preserved hiatus and the other half-with the eliminated hiatus. There are three ways to eliminate the hiatus: by vowel contraction, vowel elision or by inserting the consonant [j]. Acoustically it is often difficult to discriminate between cases of vowel contraction and vowel elision. Therefore, there was a small-scale experimental research carried out. It aimed at identifying differences (if at all) between the following forms: neteis and ne'teis
