ENThis paper presents the creative work of Modris Tenisons and the pantomime troupe in Kaunas (1967-1972) as a project of nonconformist theatre. The very organisational model of the troupe differed from the highly institutionalised, bureaucratic and stagnant model specific for the troupes of the state theatres and thus implicated a possibility to oppose the standards pressed by the regime. Indiscrete, comm unity-like troupe of Modris Tenisons was not only an alternative to the modes of existence, working and management of the mainstream theatres, but also a challenge to the ideology that conditioned the mainstream. Consequently, the pantomime troupe may be compared w ith the Polish and Czechoslovakian “small forms” theatres of the fifties and sixties. The aesthetic program of Modris Tenisons and his troupe (plastic and visual pantom imic expression, expressive mise-en-scčne, etc.) also relates the creative work o f the troupe to the nonconform ist trend of Lithuanian theatre. First of all, the anti-verbal expression per se often is an alternative to the comprom ised lexicon of the official culture; secondly, modern visual and plastic elements of art during the Soviet period were a way to make relevant the subjects and narratives, that signified a change of the ethical identity, moral imagination or nationalistic myths of the society under the regime. The creative work of Modris Tenisons is pervaded with topics of the individual rebellion and the allegoric narrative of the conflict between an individual and the anonymous crowd. This shaped the moral projects of that tim e and can be interpreted as a typical representation of the nonconformist stance in the Lithuanian theatre. [From the publication]
