ENDuring the reign of the Tsar and the First World War, the first military aerodromes were established: in the field near Zokniai manor, the field near Panevėžys, Plukiai village, and the fields of Pajuostis manor were put into use. After 1930, intensive construction of new barracks began in Lithuania, mostly near smaller towns where there were no barracks during the Tsar’s time. New projects of barracks, which met the requirements of the time, were prepared by famous Lithuanian architects and engineers, including P. Kriščiukaitis, B. Elzbergas, A. Šalkauskis, A. Rozenbliumas, etc. Military building complexes were designed, which provided water supply, sewerage, electricity. Barrack complexes were built at the approaches to the towns, to important roads and railways. Military cantonments were designed according to strict principles of geometric planning. Unlike the Tsarist period, the settlement of Lithuanian garrisons in cities and towns had great significance for the dissemination and strengthening of Lithuanian culture: their territories included clubs, cinemas, reading rooms, joint army and public meetings, theater performances, concerts, which were also open to the public. In small towns, garrisons often became the only centers of culture, they had halls and libraries. [From the publication]
