ENOf all Panevėžys dialects, Northern Panevėžys differs the most from the literary language and is somewhat similar to the Northern Samogitian dialect. Distinctive features of Northern Panevėžys are: 1. general retraction of accent, 2. drop of former short vowels of the inflection, 3. distribution of vowels i, u in four positions and ę, ą, em̃, eñ, am̃, añ turning into ė, o, ẹm̃, ẹñ, ọm̃, ọñ. Literary and proper words have the same phonetic, accentuating, composing and inflectional features. In the area of universal accent retraction, it is most difficult to distinguish between the 2nd and 4th accent class words. Sometimes a singular instrumental case, plural dative, accusative and locative cases can help with this. According to the restoration of the total index of proper names into the literary language, there are three groups of place names in Lithuanian Žiemgala: place names that have been regularly in accordance with sounds restored to the literary language, distorted and semi-dialectical place names.
