LTReikšminiai žodžiai: Akmens amžiaus gyvenvietės; Pugainiai; Neris; Stone Age settlements; Pugainiai; Neris.

ENIn the segment of the Neris valley between Vilnius and Kernavė, the search for the objects of the Stone Age has been carried out since the 3rd decade of the 20th century, however the more dramatic results were achieved only at the very end of last century. So far the earliest traces of human activity have been found only in the eastern part of this area. These are Pasieniai and Vilnius 1 sites, where tanged points were found dated to the Early Alleröd - the very beginning of Late Dryas (c. 11 000-10 400 ВС). Flint artifacts of the later period (Late Dryas - beginning of Preboreal), which could be attributed to the Swiderian and Ahrensburgian cultures, were found investigating the settlements of Pasieniai 1, Pugainiai (Papiškės) 1 and the sites close to Saide - Stirniai, Vaičiūniškės, Smilgiai, and Semeniškės. There are more remnants of the settlements of the Mesolithic period (c. 9600-5600/5800 ВС) registered, however these sites have not been more broadly investigated so far. Flint artifacts characteristic of Kunda culture of the Early Mesolithic period have been found in Kernavė and in the territory of Gudeliai (Lenkiškės) barrow group. Trapezoidal and lanceted points typical of the Late Mesolithic period have been found at Kernavė, Pasieniai, Mitkiškės, Neravai, Sviliškės, Šiurmonys, and Šilėnai. Flint, stone and ceramic findings characteristic of the Neolithic period (c. 5800/5600-2000 ВС) have been discovered in the territory of Varliškiai barrow group (on the bank of Dumblis Lake), at Mitkiškės, Pugainiai (Papiškės), Sviliškės, Smigliai, and Pasieniai. Triangular flint points, flint and stone axes typical of the end of the period have been found in the much broader territory (in Kernavė, Smilgiai, Šilėnai, as well as in the surroundings of Dūkštos, in Molynė, Mitkiškės, and etc.), however these sites have not been archaeologically investigated in more detail so far.So, summarizing it is possible to affirm that the banks of the Neris between Vilnius and Kernavė have been lacking investigators'attention for too long. Judging from individual findings and following analogies, the restored vision of the oldest past periods is only approximate and in the future it should be substantially corrected with modern investigations of a greater extent.
