ENAccording to the data available today, Marijampolė takes its beginning from the Pažešupis village, the name of which was mentioned in written sources first in 1667. The first chapel in the village was constructed in 1717 or 1718, and to the South of the village - the Kvietiškio estate of the Prienai elder M. Butleris and his wife P. Ščiukaitė-Butlerienė was built. In the fourth decade of the XVIII century, the name of Pašesupis village was changed into Staropole. Meeting the request of P. Butlerienė, the Marion monastery was established in 1750, and the first monk settled at the chapel. On the eve of 1758, Staropole became a town. In 1754, the Pope granted the permission to establish a noviciate and a school. St. Trinity fraternity was established in 1754. A new monastery with a church were built and officially opened near the town in 1758. A hospital was opened in the same year. In 1758, the town changed its name to Marijampolė. After the fire of 1765 the town was reconstructed following the rectanguiarshape plan. In 1782, the town counted 99 cottages and 7 land plots The Marijampolė parish was established. Marijampolė boasted the status of 6 trade fairs per year, granted to the town by the Lithuanian and Polish King Stanislovas Augustas in 1785 and in 1792 a four year powering statė Seym (Parliament) granted the town the privilege of magdeburg self-govemment right. A new (brick) monastery was constructed in 1791. After the third Lithuanian-Polish Commonwealth partition in 1795, when Užnemunė was attached to Prussia, Marijampolė became the Balstogė department district centre. [From the publication]
