ENThe principal aim of the article is to raise the issue of the artistic value of Škėma’s literary output. Analysing the reasons for the miter’s popularity and the immense interest in his work, the author concentrates on non-literary causes - ideological, historic, and academic context. The difference between ways of judging of his work in exile and in Lithuania is detected. Škėma’s reputation as an outstanding playwright created by the two authoritative critics Šilbajoris and Bilaišytė in the Lithuanian literary history is discussed. Drawbacks characteristic of Škėma’s dramas, i.e. a turn for sentimentality and rhetoric dialogues are also evident in his prose. The author of the article considers his most autobiographical texts to have the most artistic value. However, the signs of creative defeat are observed in the cases where the writer attempts to be philosophical and does not resist the temptation to demonstrate his erudition. The path of mythological and cultural allusions Škėma has chosen is admitted to be both a dangerous and successful way of creating his fictional world. Associative writing or the flow of consciousness, which has placed Škėma’s most celebrated texts among the best works of the Lithuanian literature is said to be the greatest of the writer’s artistic achievements.
