ENAlthough Józef Piłsudski s language has already been the subject of scholarly analyses in the past, it remains an attractive material for researchers. One of the most frequent terms appearing in his comments is "childhood homeland" - Lithuania. The image of Lithuania in Józef Pilsudski's statements and remarks appears in three aspects: personal one - as the place of his descent; historical - Lithuania as the country suffering under reprisals of the partitioning power; and perspectival - a vision of о a shared Polish-Lithuanian future. A linguistic analysis covers the Marshal’s comments and statements mainly from his collected works published in the late 1930s as well as those that were published in the later period, mostly in the London-New York periodical Niepodległość. In a historical perspective, apart from a few comments referring to the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Piłsudski focused his attention on the post-partition period, emphasising the topic of Poland's captivity. The term plays a role of the key to the understanding of the situation of Lithuania under the partitions. In the aspect of the future, the topic of concord dominates that should underpin mutual Polish-Lithuanian relations. And finally, in the personal perspective, Lithuania is reduced to one place only - his beloved, dear Vilnius, which is the key to Pilsudski’s emotions, strongly expressed in his language.
