ENLithuanian, where the negative prefix can attach both to the auxiliary and to the lexical verb in the periphrastic perfect/resultative construction. It is shown that the morphological position of the negation correlates with its semantic scope with respect to the perfect, which can have both truthconditional and pragmatic repercussions. The Lithuanian data are compared to those of the genetically related and geographically neighbouring languages, such as Latvian, Slavic vernaculars and Baltic Finnic. The similarities between the Lithuanian and dialectal Slavic negated perfect constructions are hypothesized to constitute a potential areal feature. It is also shown that the formal “duality” of the negated perfect does not occur in the Standard Average European languages, but is attested in various languages of Asia. [From the publication p. 827]
