ENThe article is concerned with the concept of 'identity'. It has been settled that aspirations after expression of own ethnic distinctiveness in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania became noticeable in the second half of the 18lh century. Considerations of the own - somebody else's opposition are manifested in the early relations between Catholics and Protestants. Tom pages of books, cut out and smeared names of the adversaries on the ideological battlefield are a testimony to thai. In the age of Enlightenment, the whole discussion concerns the principles of Catholic faith and Christian morality. Arguments in the margins of books were made within the circle of co-friars and even in the very monastery. These are extremely interesting testimonies to behaviors and attitudes towards intellectual effort of ones and taking advantage of the results of these efforts by others. The individual - others (somebody else) contrast among citizens (nobility and clergy) became the most apparent in the attitude towards Jews and Muslims (the Turkish) in the 18th century. Historical tradition and remembrance of the historical Nobles' Commonwealth were - together with religious and ethnic bonds - significant factors that brought the village closer to the court. The bond with tradition and maintenance of historical remembrance was especially characteristic of friars. The examination of differences serves the synthetic history of the book culture of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. [From the publication]
