Summary / Abstract:

ENVydūnas is one of the most eminent symbolists in Lithuanian culture. His aspiration to express a complicated nature of a human being, especially nature of his metaphysical reality and one’s way towards divinity was the chief cause for Symbolism to become the main principal in Vydūnas’ fiction. The place of action and its every detail as a characterization of a character were of great importance to Vydūnas, because it usually symbolized situations of a hidden spiritual life of a human being. The spiritual development of a human being forms the basis for Vydūnas' ideas in his fiction. Spiritual ascension occurs when a charactor contemplates his/her existence, during a meditation on his/her life, or when he/she meets a wise person or reads the Scriptures. Mountains, hills and rocks (and other archetypal symbols such as light, water and trees, in particular) where his characters experience visions, insights or spiritual transformation are related to spiritual depths of a character and his/ her transcendental experience. A hillside (a valley) is usually depicted as the opposite to a mountain, as a symbol of spiritual darkness or low consciousness. Descending the hill symbolizes spiritual degradation, darkening of consciousness. A valley is also associated with the material reality, with elemental human feelings and desires, with social and religious attitudes and habits, which become obstacles while climbing to a higher level of being, and imprison one in a low level of consciousness, superstitions, fear and grievances. A valley as a metaphor of everyday existence of human life, feelings and human passions are not opposed to a mountain; it helps emphasize the necessity of the priority of spiritual human nature. The main and leading role in a human being’s life is given to higher humanism (divinity) and to spiritual values, which enhance constant evolution and ascension towards the Divine, the realization and experience of the Divine. In the mystery "The Witch" the ideas of spiritual ascension and dissension are depicted extremely clearly. Climbing up the mountain symbolizes the growth of consciousness and self-realization without thinking of oneself as a body, or as feelings, or as the mind but realizing one's essence as a spiritual being related to the Highest Existence. Vydūnas sees it as the essence of the evolution of a human being, the evolution of all nations of the world, and the world itself. [From the publication]
