Summary / Abstract:

ENThis work examines a very relevant topic, the identification of issues that usually arise during the adaptation of a code of ethics in various business organisations. The aim of the work, which is to provide recommendations and guidelines not only to help identify problems but also to solve them throughout the adoption process in the organisation, has been achieved. It consists of three main parts. The first part analyses the purpose of a code of ethics, its mode of operation, and it relationship with other organisational tools. In the second part, the research methodology and the motives behind its choice are explained. The third part presents the results of the research, which reveals the main issues that emerge during the implementation of a code of ethics in specific organisations. The study was carried out in three Lithuanian business organisations which engage in different activities. It revealed that in all three organisations, corporate management faced similar problems with regard to the implementation of a code of ethics. Firstly, problems in adopting a code of ethics that were identified were conditioned by mistakes made by management in various stages of the creation and adaptation of a code of ethics. Because of the mistaken understanding of the mode of operation of a code of ethics, improper methods were chosen for the management of the organisations. These methods did not support the creation of a proper team of members of the organisation who could understand the provisions of a code of ethics in the same way, and who could aim at common professional goals. Motivational tools which were applied without any consistent system were not based on objective criteria in the estimation of ethics. The consequence of these processes were results that did not meet the leaders’ expectations. The lack of ethical knowledge and its practical adoption initiated disappointment in the abilities of the code of ethics. The leaders of organisations who did not know themselves how to apply the provisions of a code of ethics expected it to be done by junior staff. Evidently, the leaders did manage to avoid problems, because they knew how to offer a suitable example in this field. The staff do not take part in the systematic implementation of the provisions of the code of ethics, since management do not know how to properly organise and manage these processes. Thus, the lack of a common ethical infrastructure in organisations led to the inadequacy of the code of ethics as an instrument for creating and maintaining ethics. The evaluation of a code of ethics is part of the day-to-day processes of business organisations. Thanks to this, it is possible to spot flaws in the code of ethics and mistakes in its application process, and to identify problems and causal relationships. Adjusting to problem areas is one of the key conditions for any organisation in order to evolve and grow according to its potential and ever-changing conditions. These processes require ethical knowledge and its consistent application. Only then can change be expected: in the consciousness of the individual, in the organisation, and in society. Recommendations are provided for avoiding issues in the application of a code of ethics. [From the publication]
