ENAbout the same time when the Karaims settled in Trakai, a Tatar community was settled down between Trakai and Vievis, near the river Vokė. The Tatars make the history of their establishment in Lithuania start with a legend. It is known in several versions, the earliest ofwhich is recorded by the Polish chronicler Jan Długosz, 83 years after the legendary date of the establishment of the Tatars in Lithuania (1396-1397). According to this legend, Grand Duke Vytautas brought back thousands of Tatars with their families as his booty after a victorious battle. Part of them he ceded to the Polish king, the remaining were settled down in Lithuania. The Tatars of Poland were Christianised and only those of Lithuania succeeded in preserving their religion and traditional way of life. [From the publication]
