Summary / Abstract:

ENThe article reviews parallels between Liudas Truikys and Salvador Dali, the coryphaeus of surrealism, in terms of their life and work. In 2004, both artists would have celebrated their 100th birthday anniversaries. Several causes encouraged to reveal inner affinity of the two creators and their muses, namely the artists' conspicuous breakaway from the mediocre masses, their strictly individualised and colourful sources of creation, love for theatre and, finally, the coincidence of their biographical facts. The environment in which both great personalities were born and matured during the first decades of the century has attributes that link Lithuania and Spain more than it may be noticeable at first sight. These include moral Christian traditions, patriarchal structure of society, the threat of the First World War, oppressive moods of the starting war, post-war scepticism. Truikys and Dali had a particularly categorical opinion about the freedom of creation. Neither one nor the other put up with intruded views; they never agreed to compromises, and searched for new ways of self-expression. Theatre has a particular role in both artists' life as it comprised several forms of art such as instrumental and vocal music, fine arts, and movement. They would have to be called synthesisers who in their original manner constructed a unique creative fabric out of separate art spheres, styles and ideas. A special part in Truikys' and Dali's life was occupied by woman-inspirer. Liudas Truikys and Marijona Rakauskaitė, and Salvador Dali and Jelena Djakovna or Gala are two perfect examples of artists and their muses. [From the publication p. 160]
