ENPrivate writings from the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth are represented by genres which are typical of autobiographical literature. There are diaries, chronicles, memoires, collections of letters, written by nobles or burghers, and writings belonging to the intellectual elite. These texts were and still are very well known and have been analyzed as examples of the so called Sarmatian culture, the texts which reflected the self-consciousness of their authors. One of the most interesting sources of egodocumentary form is the journal of Józef Jerzy Hylzen. The manuscript divided into two parts, recently discovered in the library of the Vilnius University, is a reflection of self-consciousness of the young magnate in the Wettin (Saxon) dynasty period. On the other hand, it is also personal testimony from the turn of the era of Sarmatian culture and Enlightenment. The first part, which constitutes the main content of this publication, is a relation from Hylzen’s trip to Vienna and Paris. It covers the period from 15 September 1752 to 25 August 1754. Private notes of the author, written in Latin, Polish and French, are an interesting document that shows the Grand Tour in the mid-eighteenth century. The second part of the manuscript, which will be published in the future, is a daily-diary. The author describes the daily life and his political career after returning to the country (from 25 August 1754 to 20 May 1759).Józef Jerzy began his journey from Gdansk on 15 September 1752. He titled his manuscript a „Diarium a discessu meo gedano Viennam 1752 15 7bris” (a diary since my departure from Gdańsk to Vienna). In fact, a trip to the capital of the empire was only a stage in the further peregrination in Europe – across Bavaria, France, the Netherlands, Prussia. Description of travel and personal reflections of a young tra- veler is a great source for research on the culture of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and Europe in the mid-eighteenth century.
