ENAlgimantas Švėgžda (1941-1996) was undoubtedly one of the most important but also most withdrawn representatives of 20th century Lithuanian intellectual art. He called himself the last Lithuanian pagan and the first European of the 21st century. He was an artist open to the world. His interests included not only art, but also philosophy, psychology, the history of civilization, literature, music, and the non-European cultures of the East and elsewhere. He was engrossed in the world of his own inner experiences. He was a deeply serious and contemplative person. He tried to rise above a narrow understanding of nationality, but he loved Lithuania, its natural surroundings, its animals and plants, and its grasses and insects. [Extract, p. 7]
