Summary / Abstract:

ENResearch shows that unstressed syllables of Southern Aukštaitian are usually shortened to half-long, and their quantitative features, i.e. intensity and tone, are weakened. Followed by a final stressed short syllable, unstressed long syllables, the basis of which contains vowels and alternating [ie, uо], often remain long, though their length is not equal to that of the stressed analogues. Formerly this phenomenon was more regular and more marked. Rare are the cases when unstressed syllables, the basis of which are diphthongs or semidiphthongs, are emphasized. Experimental studies indicate that the syllables, the duration of which is emphasized by the two-peak stress, vary.
