ENFor a long time Town Halls used to and still play an exclusive part in the identity of European cities. In one form or another, city squares existed for over two thousand years, ever since the Greeks created the first Agora – a place where people could gather. The quality of the urban environment has a huge impact on people's lives. Unfortunately, the current condition of public spaces and recreational areas in some Lithuanian settlements is very poor, with low recreational attraction. One of the most important features of this heritage – alienation, which manifests itself as indifference or aggression towards the environment. City centers are increasingly cluttered by new buildings, green recreational spaces are shrinking, the environment is becoming increasingly sterile. The urban structure of Kretinga town, which was planned in the XVII century, is now altered and it partially lost its original composition. Town Hall has disappeared, the character of the squares layout itself has changed: a part of it was used as a Town Hall, while the other part was converted into a square, thus ruining the open urban space. After conducting an analysis on the current state of the square‘s recreational-architectural environment, the identified problems were as follows: the functional use of the square; existing car parking area in the central part of the square; the multifunctional use of the square. When giving square arrangement proposals, the goal is to form a space that is both aesthetically attractive and can satisfy the needs of today’s visitors, which would allow for a variety of short-term leisure activities.
