ENThe article deals with the research and analytical potential of Lithuanian book collections and book collections outside Lithuania with respect to pastoral texts, i.e. the voluminous religious literature used in the lengthy process of evangelisation and religious instruction, changes in mentality, reinforcing of the new faith and morality, all of which took more time than the act of baptism in the Roman catholic rite. Already some time ago, Leonard E. Boyle and Joseph Goering proposed a name for this kind of literature: "Pastoralia. The popular literature of the care of souls", encompassing manuals for priests receiving confessions, treatises on virtues and vices, commentaries and elucidations ofprayers, catechisms, sermon and exempla collections, theological and moral studies, synodal statutes, catechetical texts, and reports of canonical visitations. The author discusses the state of research and proposes directions of primary-source investigations, among others in Latin and German medieval manuscript materials extant in the Wróblewski Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences in Vilnius.
