ENThe article analyses the place of Nietzsche in the history of Western philosophy and the causes of the popularity of his writings. The philosophical concepts of being, nothing, and their relationship are employed in order to understand the scope of Nietzsche’s revolt against rational thinking as such and, more specifically, against metaphysical reasoning of Greek and Hegelian type. It is argued that any true philosophy always balances, so to speak, on razor’s edge between being and nothing. Nietzsche’s thought, being strongly biased in favour of nothing, is not able to keep this balance (and to strike the right balance in the first place) and therefore cannot on these terms be called a true philosophy. Moreover, Nietzsche’s thought can be described as antiphilosophy, for the Nietzschean twilight of idols eventually and inescapably leads to the realm of the idols of twilight. Nietzsche can be regarded as an interesting partner of philosophical dialogue but cannot be our teacher and leader. [From the publication]
