Summary / Abstract:

ENIn the creative biography of Alfredas Paulauskas, the period from 1971 to 1997 is highly marked by artistic creation, and the hours dedicated to it used to serve as a kind of sanctuary against the stress experienced in the professional and public activity, against the daily round of everyday life. During the years under discussion, A. Paulauskas com posed 124 watercolours, 15 pastels, 12 oil paintings, 30 metal and wood plastic pieces. A breakthrough way of self-realisation was not an accidental point as the first art cognition lessons were given to him in the early childhood by his parents, the former graduates from Kaunas School of Arts. In 1946-1950, being the student at the Department of Architecture at Kaunas University (that was reorganised to Kaunas Polytechnic Institute in 1950), he attended the lectures of Drawing and gained the strong fundamentals of composition, watercolour and plasticart. For A. Paulauskas, art has not turned into amajor choice of his life, how ever, the composed pieces of fine arts reveal the creative multid imensional approach and aesthetical attitude of the architect. In the 1970s, A. Paulauskas composed a few dozens of small scale plastic pieces. Most of them include the compositions of a decorativech aracter featuring silhouette dynamics, contour expression and com binations of different materials, i.e. metal, wood. When designing public places, A. Paulauskas used to compose the small-scale architecture elements in their environment, even sculptural pieces in individual situations. Working out the project of the restaurant "Žilvinas" in Joniškis, he composed the sculpture "Meilė"/Love of coppertin for the backyard of the building (1975). Designing the funeral home in Kaunas, A. Paulauskas composed the monumental sculptural composition of stylised forms "Liūdesys"/Sorrow (constructed in 1985), thereby achieving an exceptional ensemble harmony.During the design works of the quay in Nida, he offered the expressive sculpture "Jūratė" (1985) to emphasise the interaction between the structure and the Curonian Lagoon. From 1975, A. Paulauskas switched his attention to pastel and watercolour techniques with a wide range of performance styles. Pastels - they were composed in the creative studio equipped by A. Paulauskas him self - were painted by the artist at a leisurely pace, arranging the whole of motifs tightly on a large-format painting or expanding the chosen topic through a triptych. The compositions might be characterised by the images embodying the subjective vision of the artist, by the conditional form, by the contraposition between good and evil, light and darkness. In pastels "Be kelio"/Pathless (1975), "Himnas"/ Anthem (1976), "Paskutinis spindulys"/The Last Ray (1977), the existential drama of a human is conveyed responsively by the colour rubbing technique, where as the pastel "Fleitistas"/Flute Player (1980) gives a sense to the painful emotional experience of the personal life. The most significant and abundant portion of the creative legacy of A. Paulauskas consists of watercolours. fter having acquired the fundamentals of classical watercolour during his studies, the artist developed this type of painting from 1975 to 1982, enriching the Lithuanian watercolour with his individual com positional and colourful solutions. Watercolours were painted by A. Paulauskas in the lap of nature, finding the motifs attractive to him during the short trips. His watercolour scenes captured the manors and farmsteads, the panoramas of Aukštaitija (North-Eastern Lithuania), Dzūkija (South-Eastern Lithuania) or the banks of the Nemunas going into the distance.Scenes of fields or forest fringes stretching away, picturesque slopes of the Nemunas or meadows featuring the mosaics of colour combinations have formed the individual structure compositions with a constructive picture highlighting the graphical contour, with green, brownish and yellow ishshades of different colour intensity, with soft and wide strokes. The rational mindset of the architect and his subtle sensation of nature, nature moods, lights and reflections give a distinctivech aracter to his watercolours. In 1977-1983, watercolours by A. Paulauskas were exposed at Fine Art Exhibition of Kaunas Artists, at the National Watercolour Exhibition; in 2013-2015, they were demonstrated at personal exhibitions. [From the publication]
