ENThe common features of the ethnic music of the Lithuanians and Letts from the one side and the Byelorussians, Russians, Ukrainians and Poles from the other are researched, having the purpose to determine the reasons and periods of their formation. Main objective is the ethnic music of the Balts and Slavs. The subject of the research is to disclose the conditions of the origin of the ethnic music of the Balts and Slavs. The methods, which were used: comparative, analysis, and synthesis. Data of the research: more than 400 examples of ethnic music (about 200 of which are presented at the research works and at the published collections of ethnic music; and more than 200 records); about 50 works concerning the ethnic music of Northern Europe (about 40 articles and 10 monographs, thesis, abstract of the thesis). As the result the hypothesis is proposed that the common features of ethnic music of the Balts and Slavs could have appeared not only as the result of the neighbourhood, but also as the result of the common origin of the Balts and Slavs. [From the publication]
