ENThe first school in Skapiškis had been founded by Dominican monks in 1755. Students were few, classes were given by the monks. In 1831, both the school and the monastery had been closed. After the serfdom was abolished, until 1905, there was a school with teaching in Russian, because all teachers were Russians. From 1905, teaching was performed in Lithuanian and Russian. In 1920, the school was moved to the building of the monastery, there were 4 forms of teaching. From 1922 to 1929, it was a pro-gymnasium preparing pupils for secondary school. During the interwar period, two-year courses for teachers were in place. About 360 pupils studied at the primary school, pro-gymnasium and the courses at that time. During the World War II, there was a trade school in Skapiškis. In 1944, the pro-gymnasium was recreated, and from 1950 it was renamed to a seven-year school. In 1952, the secondary school was founded. It had brought up 55 graduate classes; among its graduates there are scholars, artists, gold medal bearers and teachers. The teaching was performed in 6 buildings. The current school was built in 1967. The directors of the pro-gymnasium were Vladas Merkevičius, Jonas Beleckas, Antanas Likša, Alfonsas Vepštas, and Alfonsas Rimkus. The first director of the secondary school was Stasys Merkys. Jonas Kaušakys headed the Skapiškis secondary school for a long time. From 1992, its directress is Birutė Zaborskienė. From 2012, it is a 10-year school. There is also a joint group attended by kids from a three-year age. Due to decline in town's population, number of students also decreases. Nevertheless, in 2017 the Skapiškis basic school is recognised Good School in the district and given additional funding. Now it has about 80 students and 20 teachers. [From the publication]
