ENOften while talking about M. K. Čiurlionis’ art we confront the question of its contact with Oriental cultures and art. Obviously, Čiurlionis’ art contains no direct compositional or plastic connections with the principles of Oriental art. No Lithuanian painter had any analogous Oriental intentions of art as a spiritual act. Nevertheless, if we try to elucidate the origin of his art, the character of the scenes and general aims of his creative work, we cannot avoid the question of Čiurlionis and the Orient. All these aspects are analyzed in the context of late 19th and early 20th century Polish culture because the strongest effect of Oriental cultures on the Lithuanian artist was during his studies in Warsaw. The article explains what the painter himself perceived under the concept of the Orient, and why this question was so topical in Polish art around 1900. It shows that Čiurlionis’ creative work could only be partially connected to the influence of the Far East. The art of this Lithuanian painter is an outcome of the cultural syncretism characteristic of the beginning of the 20th century. [From the publication]
