ENThis article discusses the issue of Lithuanian ethical identity. At its core is the geographical and geopolitical situation of Lithuania, manifesting itself as the interrelation between Eastern and Western cultures. That is why some renowned Lithuanian philosophers before the Second World War such as S. Šalkauskis (1886-1941), proposed absorbing from Eastern and Western Christianity only the things that would correspond to the idea of achieving a synthesis of these two Christian cultures in Lithuania. According to him, this would be the most progressive achievement and the best solution for the national culture. The author of the article points out that other than this idea raised by Šalkauskis, of the synthesis of Eastern and Western Christian cultures being possible in Lithuania, nothing else was either proposed or achieved. The article argues that such a cultural synthesis would hardly be possible, as the process of the formation of the Lithuanian cultural and ethical identity was also influenced by pre-Christian culture, enhancing its peculiarity and specificity.
