ENThis article examines a life and activity of cardinal Jurgis Radvila (1556-1600) in a context of a development and diffusion of Catholicism in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania during the last third of the XVI century. An analysis of the ecclesiastical career and activities of card. J. Radvila, heir of the most powerful family of the Polish-Lithuanian state of the period, discloses a role that power and influence would play both in the formation of the religious identity of the inhabitants of ethnic Lithuania and in the creation of favorable political, religious, social, cultural conditions for the prevalence of Catholicism during the decisive final decades of the confessionalization of the Lithuanian society. Though nobility as a precondition for an assumption of any political or religious office in Poland and Lithuania has become a legal requirement already in 1505 and though decades ago two other members of the family of Radvila have had an episcopal dignity conferred to them, never before oh an episcopal throne ofVilnius has sat an offspring of elite so rich and powerful as card. J. Radvila. Protegee of king Stephan I and Pope Gregory XIII, trusted person of king Sigismund III and Pope Clement VIII, acquaintance of saints C. Bor- romeo and R. Bellarmino, advised by Jesuit fathers, J. Radvila knew how to employ his fame and influence to the advantage of the Catholic Church. Already during his first months on the episcopal throne of Vilnius, J. Radvila has tried to impose a censorship of books, founded the first seminary, convened a diocesan synod and issued the first pastoral letter.A fervent pastor of the post-Tridentine era of the Catholic Reform, card. G. Radvila has five times visited his diocese of Vilnius, supported the institutions of Catholic education, religious orders and confraternity of St. Anne. As a senator, on the political level he advocated the interests of Catholics and on behalf of the king was an intermediary of the dynastic marriage between Sigismund III and Anne of Austria in May 1592. This article also presents an unresolved problem of the exact date of the conversion of J. Radvila to Catholicism, discusses some imprecise historiographical loci communi (e. g., participation in the conclaves of 1590 and an alleged closeness to being elected a Pope). An effort is made to trace, where possible, some traits of the personality of card. J. Radvila. [From the publication]
