ENIn Wilno the seminary was instituted by Bishop Jerzy Radziwiłł in 1582. At first it functioned in the bishop’s palace, later in a separate building. It was run by the Jesuits, but additionally supervised by the Wilno chapter. Because of the scarcity of means, only 6-8 clerics could be maintained. The Jesuits also taught philosophy and moral theology at the premises of Wilno University, as well as church singing and ceremonies on special courses. Controversies between the Jesuits and the chapter over the seminary or the clerics’ attendance at the services in the cathedral occurred rather frequently, so in 1652 the Jesuits decided not to run the seminary any longer. However, they continued to educate priests both at the university and the papal seminary. [From the publication]
